How is my child's
schedule determined?
Unlike elementary school, requesting a teacher and/or team is less
common and cannot be guaranteed. There are a lot of components that
go into a middle school schedule. Data from CRCT scores, teacher
assessments and teacher recommendations is gathered to help
determine proper academic classes. All academic teams offer advance
courses and are academically balanced, therefore, eliminating the
perception of one team being “better” than the other. Here at BRMS,
we have adopted a “Modified Block” academic model that allows more
time in the four core academic subjects areas of Mathematics,
Language Arts/Reading, Science, and Social Studies.
How does it work? Students will go to their four core academic
areas (math, language arts, science, & social studies) everyday for
approximately 80 minutes each class. Students will be on a rotation
schedule (“A” day and “B” day) for their connection/P.E./Music
classes.
For example: a 6th grade non-music student may go to
P.E. on “A” days and a connection class on “B” days for the entire
school year (depending on the student’s actual schedule). If a
student is in our music program, he or she will attend the music
class all year; in addition have one semester of P.E. and one
semester of connection classes. For example: a 6th
grade music student may go to music class on “A” days and P.E. on
“B” days 1st semester and music class on “A” days and
connection classes on “B” days 2nd semester (depending on
the student’s actual schedule). We have found this academic model
to be effective in improving student achievement.
How do I sign my child up for
Music and/or Sports?
There will be a
table for you to sign your child up or gather additional information
for Music and/or Sports during our Verification Day / Verification
Night (6th Grade). Please check the dates under the
“Dates to Remember” link.
