Science & Social Studies Fair Project Information

Dear Parents,

It's time to start work on our school's Science & Social Studies Fair projects!  In a continued effort to challenge and prepare your child for high school, all students at Blackmon Road Middle School are being required and encouraged to complete either a Science Fair Project and/or a Social Studies Fair Project.  Overachieving students may complete both projects if desired.

The most important ingredient in any project is the amount of knowledge the student acquires. The purpose for encouraging students to complete long term projects such as the Social Studies fair project is to give students the opportunity to research problems or explore a topic in a systematic scientific way. Another benefit of such a project is that they also require students to integrate and apply the skills they have learned in language arts, math, and other academic classes. Furthermore, such projects allow students the opportunity to express their curiosity, creativity, and ingenuity. The fact that competition is involved in the school fairs should not overshadow the basic reason for the project. The primary goal is student learning.

Some of the basic fundamentals of the project will be completed in class: However, a great deal of the project (research, tri-board, etc.) should be completed at home. It is essential that you work with your child to ensure a firm understanding of the research process. Your child will need your guidance as each step of the research process is conducted. This is a great opportunity to work together with your child to produce an outstanding project. BRMS will post the necessary information needed to help make this process as successful as possible for your child on the school's website at https://blackmon.mcsdga.net.

If a child chooses to do the Social Studies Fair Project, the due date to turn the project into their teacher is on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.  Selected Social Studies Fair projects will then be entered in the school wide Social Studies Fair set for November 17, 2009. The top projects from the Social Science Fair will be entered in the MCSD Science Fair scheduled for January 23, 2010.

If a child is in the 6th or 7th grade and chooses to do the Science Fair Project, the due date to turn the project into their teacher will be Wednesday, January 06, 2010.  All 8th grade projects are due November 12, 2009.  This will allow the science teachers the opportunity to review all projects before they are submitted to BRMS’s fair on January 19, 2010.  The top projects from the school Science Fair will then be entered in the MCSD Science Fair on February 2, 2010.

This is a major project and will represent a significant portion of your child’s grade for the next grading period(s).  Ample time has been scheduled and work has been spread out, so students can complete the work at a comfortable pace. _______________________________________________________________________
