Research
Paper (summary of your research)
Cover:
Use a 3 prong folder and put the following information
on the front:
1)
Title of the project (2) Your name(s) (3) School Name
(4) Grade Level (5) Social Studies Teacher’s name
You
will need to include the following pages in your
research paper (bold type indicates what should be in
the heading at the top of those pages):
Page
1: Title page with the same information as the cover
Page 2: Statement of
the problem (States why the topic is important to study)
Page 3-7: Research
Findings (Summary of the research presented in a logical
convincing manner) Begin with an introduction that
summarizes the main points to be covered by the paper.
Avoid personal pronouns such as “I” and “we”. Mention
the author’s of the sources you found throughout the
paper as you move from one source to another (for
example “John Smith wrote that…”). Make sure that all
of the sources you used are mentioned in the paper and
cited in the bibliography. Avoid Plagiarism at all
costs. Papers not written in your own words will be
given the grade of 0. Make sure that you use
information from a variety of sources. Remember that
this is NOT a “report”; it is a “research paper”. You
are to pull together information from a variety of
reliable sources and draw conclusions about your topic
based on those findings. In order to make those
conclusions plausible, you must merge those sources into
a convincing argument that “proves” logically your
conclusions.
Page 8: Conclusion
Summary paragraph (about one-half page) that outlines
the main points of your research findings
Page 9: Bibliography
(This is a list of ALL of your sources in alphabetical
order.) Use MLA style. A great summary of how to cite
sources in MLA style is found at
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_mla.html.

10: Acknowledgements (In complete sentences, thank those
who helped you with the project.)
Research
Paper Format Rules:
12 pt.
Times New Roman or Arial font, black ink, no italics, no
bold print, 1 inch margins for
sides, top, and bottom, no pictures in the paper,
do not use plastic sheet protectors.
Abstract
You
must have an “Abstract” written on a 4” x 6” index card.
It must include the following information (but it won’t
be as detailed as the sections in your paper).
-
Title
-
Student Name(s)
-
Statement of the problem
-
Methodology (What types of sources were used and how
they were used?)
-
Conclusion (a 1-2 sentence summary of the main
conclusion from page 8)
Tri-Board
Neatness Counts (use glue sticks not “wet” glue).
Creatively also counts. Make it visually stimulating.
Use unusual and original materials. Include models,
artifacts, and/or examples of products in front of and
on the tri-board. Make sure you include all of the
following parts:
-
Title (Center Panel at the top)
-
Statement of the problem (left panel, top)
-
Methodology: types of sources used, why they were
chosen, and how they were used (Left panel, middle
or bottom)
-
Bulleted list of research findings (Right panel,
top)
-
Conclusion (can be the same as your conclusion page
from your paper) (Right panel, bottom)
-
Your name(s) and the abstract on back
DO NOT
put your whole paper on the tri-board. The tri-board is
to be a visual representation of your research, NOT a
place to put another copy of it. Remember: (1) be
creative (2) be neat (3) use a variety of materials.
Grading
The project will be graded as follows:
(1)
Statement of the problem:
up to
5 points
(2)
Methodology:
up to 30 points (adequate, reliable sources, sufficient
data to arrive at your conclusion, proper gathering and
interpretation of sources, evidence of use of social
science skills, relevance of sources to your topic)
(3)
Abstract:
up to 10 points
(4)
Visual Display:
up to 25 points (neatness, creativity, all parts there)
(5)

developed to a logical conclusion, correct grammar,
correct spelling, and correct punctuation, evidence of
critical thinking, written in your own words with
sources cited in the paper and the bibliography
